The Gardens of Versailles2025
The Gardens of Versailles, located on the outskirts of Paris, are renowned for their extensive collection of finely crafted sculptures. The photographer Eugène Atget repeatedly documented these spaces, capturing remnants of Paris's past through his systematic approach to urban and architectural photography.
Today, during the winter months, many of these sculptures are wrapped in protective coverings. This temporary act of enclosure is an intervention made to shield cultural heritage from natural erosion. At the same time, it obscures the sculptures' historical presence and visual symbolism.
Under layers of canvas, the sculptures appear to lose their original identity, while simultaneously acquiring a new state of existence—one that oscillates between preservation and erasure. This "unfinished" condition emerges within the subdued atmosphere of winter, inviting viewers to reconsider the complex role of art within time, nature, and human intervention.
