1.0The Oriental Others 1.02024
The Oriental Others 1.0 is a series of albumen prints produced on postcards. The images are sourced from archival photographs taken in China by 19th-century Western photographers, including John Thomson and William Saunders.
I collected and reorganized these photographs by subject matter — gardens, women, street scenes, river ports, executions, portraits — then digitally overlaid hundreds of images from the same category into a single composition. Even after repeated layering, the outline of the original image often remains recognizable, while faces, bodies, and spaces gradually collapse into a generalized visual type.
The final works are reproduced using the albumen printing process popularized in the late 19th century and printed on postcards. The postcard format refers both to the circulation of colonial photographs sent from China back to Europe and to the continued reproduction of regional stereotypes through tourism imagery.
